Read this year's pick for Author Day

Vote for your favorite author

Meet the winning author at the Main Library for an Interactive book discussion!

What is Author Day?

Author Day is an annual reading incentive program to encourage recreational reading among young adults, grades seven through nine. Those in higher grades are also welcome to participate. This year it will encompass nine Detroit Public Library branches and Children's Library, at least 20 schools and appoximately 2,400 students. Each teen will read books from the list of four young adult titles and complete a report from for each book read. Students will vote in late March for their favorite author and the winning author will speak at the Author Day Grand Final program held at Main Library in May 2009. The finale program includes dialogue with the winning author and the mingling of students from the participating Detroit Schools. Students will also learn about additional titles by the author and are given an opportunity to purchase autographed copies.

Young adult library customers who are not in the participating school class may participate through the nearest library branch and earn a chance to win a free dinner with the author and other guests at a restaurant near Main Library. Registration packages will be available at the reference desk of any branch beginning January 2009!

History of Author Day

The Author Day program began in 1987 at the Monteith Branch and the first Author Day Finale was held in the spring of 1988. The program's 10th anniversary was celebrated in the 97/98 seasons with a traveling display of pictures and booklists produced by the Marketing Department. The 2008 Author Day will mark the 21st anniversary observance of this highly anticipated event.
