Technology Training CenterFAQs

  1. Does the Internet lab only provide training or is there also public access?
  2. The Internet Lab will provide both training and access to Internet resources. A schedule of training programs is available in the Lab, and is printed in the Quarterly Guide and the current Computer Workshop Schedule.

  3. What does Internet "access" mean?
  4. Patrons will be able to:

    • access World Wide Web (WWW) pages,
    • telnet to other library and community information systems (such as the Detroit Free-Net),
    • send and receive e-mail (if they have an Internet access account from another institution or company), and
    • use software provided by the Library.

  5. Who has access to the Internet at the Detroit Public Library?
  6. The Lab is open to anyone who has a valid DPL library card. Children under the age of 8 have to be accompanied by a responsible older person.

  7. When will the public have access to the Internet Lab?
  8. The Lab is open to the public now. The Lab hours are posted on the Internet Lab home page.

  9. Is Internet access at the Detroit Public Library fee or free?
  10. Free. However, there will probably be a fee for printing at some point in the future.

  11. Is the Internet safe for me and my family?
  12. Yes. But it does need to be used responsibly. Parents need to be aware that there are adult materials available via the Internet that may not be appropriate for children. The Library has no control over the appearance or content of these materials. Therefore, it is a good idea for parents to supervise their children as they access the Internet. A good source of information on this issue is a pamphlet from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the Interactive Services Association called Child Safety on the Information Highway.

  13. How do I use the Internet as a tool?
  14. The Internet is fundamentally a communications medium. It can be used to access business and educational materials, to visit recreational sites, to shop, to send e-mail and to find people with interests similar to your own. A good starting point for finding out what's available on the Internet is Yahoo.

  15. What kind of training is available in the Internet Lab?
  16. The Library will train people to navigate the World Wide Web and to find information on the network as well as to use the software available in the Lab.

  17. Who can receive training at the Internet Lab?
  18. Anyone who can use the Lab can receive training there. However, some training sessions may be limited to adults.

  19. Is there a cost for training?
  20. Basic Internet training is free. The Library may at some time in the future decide to charge a fee for advanced or specialized training sessions in order to recover costs.

  21. When will training be available to the public?
  22. Training for the public is available now. See our current Computer Workshop Schedule.
