04/03/13 Guess Who Stopped by the Detroit Public Library?

U.S. Senators Carl Levin (D-MI) and Tom Carper (D-DE), both huge Tigers fans, stopped in the Detroit Public Library, Main Library to view the Ernie Harwell Sports Collection.

Don't forget, you too can check out one of the most impressive collections in sports. Before you go to Opening Day on Friday, make a stop at the "The Lulu and Ernie Harwell Display Room" at Main Library on Woodward, just north of Warren.

It houses a portion of the collection, including seats from Tiger Stadium and a mock broadcast booth. Access to the display room is by appointment.

This bibliography provides a selected list of books by and/or about African Americans. This booklist includes works of fiction and nonfiction for adults, children and young adults reviewed and recommended by librarians of the Detroit Public Library.


01/31/13 Black and Blue Documentary Free Screening

Join us on Friday, February 15, 7:30 PM for the screening of the documentary "Black and Blue," the story of former President Gerald Ford, Willis Ward and the controversy prior to a 1934 Michigan-Georgia Tech football game at Michigan Stadium.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A session from the film’s director Brian Kruger as he details the events that took place when Georgia Tech came to Ann Arbor to play the University of Michigan football team.

01/08/13 Free Tax Assistance

Accounting Aid Society and AARP offers free tax preparation for the 2012 tax year by volunteers at three Detroit Public Library locations.  In addition to the libraries, Accounting Aid Society is offering free tax assistance at more than 25 other locations throughout southeast Michigan. Seniors and those physically unable to visit a tax site can use Accounting Aid’s homebound tax service. For details, call the agency at 866-763-0873 or visit www.accountingaidsociety.org.

Eligibility guidelines for this free service are based on annual household income:
