Literacy Program for Adults

Mission Statement of Literacy Program for Adults

The Detroit Public Library Literacy Program for Adults aims to foster engagement with reading by creating a learner-centered, safe, and motivating environment through tutor training, an abundance of supportive materials, comprehensive assessments and reassessments, and periodic reviews of the program’s effectiveness. The current Detroit Public Library Literacy Program for Adults will focus on Reading & Writing Tutoring.

The Literacy Program will run January through November and includes one 2-month seasonal break. Tutors and learners will be accepted on a rolling basis.

Learners

We are accepting learners who are:

  • 18+ with beginner to intermediate reading skills
  • Ready to identify a specific goal for wanting to improve their reading and writing skills
  • Willing to take part in a 1-hour assessment for placement in the program
  • Ready to commit 2 hours a week for 10 months in-person at Main plus any additional homework that will be assigned

Tutors

We are looking for tutors who are:

  • 18+, reliable, patient, compassionate, positive, and able to meet deadlines with basic computer skills
  • Have at least a high school diploma or GED
  • Committed to making sure the learner is making progress toward a main reading goal, filling out monthly reports and coming prepared for shifts
  • Able to complete a 90-minute tutor training before they can begin volunteering with the program
  • Ready to commit 2 hours a week for 10 months in-person at Main plus any preparation time
