Testing for Detroit Three Jobs

Detroit Three Assembly Job Testing

Where can I get a copy of the test, and what is a passing score?

  • The contents of the test is a closely guarded secret. Copies of the test are not found in public or academic libraries.
  • There are no published absolute scores. The highest scoring applicants from the testing session are chosen.

Typical test battery

  • Assembly test measuring the ability to understand how three-dimensional objects fit together (spatial relations)
  • Forms checking test measuring the ability to quickly and accurately find errors
  • Work experience and interest inventory
  • Manual dexterity test

Advance preparation for testing -- remedial education resources

Reviewing before the test

  • The exercises found in spatial and mechanical reasoning study books might be helpful. Also some of the practice tests found in GED test preparation books, and even the practice tests from the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test prep books.

Group assessment exercises

  • Small group assessment exercises are used to measure the ability of candidates to work as a team member to solve problems.

Detroit Three Pre-Apprenticeship Testing

When are apprenticeship selection tests given?

  • Apprenticeship selection tests are given when additional workers are needed. None of the autos appear to have set intervals or schedules.

How can one find out about testing dates for external candidates?

  • Testing information is posted in the plants where apprenticeship openings will occur. Current UAW members (and their families) typically are the first to hear about candidate testing dates and therefore may be a good source of information.
  • Michigan Works! agencies, workforce diversity groups, and the apprenticeship departments of area community colleges, also receive written notice of apprenticeship testing.

Who really knows what's on the test?

  • The contents of the test is a closely guarded secret. Some staff, apprenticeship administrators, officers of the UAW National Apprenticeship Committee, and some educators engaged from time to time to teach for the STEPP program have seen copies of the test. Public or academic libraries do not have copies of the test.

Typical test battery

  • Arithmetic Reasoning Test including basic math: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; and algebra.
  • Graphic Arithmetic Test.
  • Mechanical Comprehension Test
  • Spatial Relations Test which measures the ability to see how three-dimensional objects fit together.
