Using a Computer at the Detroit Public Library

Public Computers

  • The Detroit Public Library has more than 700 computers for the public to use at its 22 library locations.
  • Computer use is FREE to anyone who has a valid library card and owes less than $10 in fees and fines.  A guest pass is available to other people for $1.
  • Whether signing in with a library card or guest pass, customers may use a computer for a total of one hour per day systemwide.  (This time restriction ensures that the computers are available to as many people as possible.)  When demand is low, the computer system will offer customers an opportunity to extend their sessions.  Staff will also consider customer requests for additional computer time, when possible. Customers who are granted a separate, second computer session must purchase a new guest pass.
  • Filters block computer access to some types of information.  Adults may ask staff to temporarily turn off the filters.  (Please note:  the Library’s Standards for Customer Behavior prohibit customers from “displaying profane, obscene or injurious language, text or graphics in public view.”)
  • Printing is available for 10¢ per page for black & white copies and $1 per page for color copies.(Please note:  customers are responsible for the cost of items they release from the printer.Customers are encouraged to ask staff for assistance before printing.)
  • By using a library computer, customers agree to abide by the Library’s Internet Usage Policy, a copy of which is available at any Reference Desk or online.

Wireless Internet

  • Most library locations also offer free wireless access to the internet to those with their own devices with wireless capabilities.
  • Customers don’t need a library card or password to access the wireless network, just search for the signal and connect.
  • Library staff can point out where the wireless signal is strongest in the building but cannot troubleshoot an individual’s computer.
  • Most locations have designated electrical outlets for customer use.  Customers may not use other outlets.
  • Filters block computer access to some types of information.  Adults may ask staff to temporarily turn off the filters.  (Please note:  the Library’s Standards for Customer Behavior prohibit customers from “displaying profane, obscene or injurious language, text or graphics in public view.”)
  • By using the library’s wireless network, customers agree to abide by the Library’s Internet Usage Policy, a copy of which is available at any Reference Desk or online.
