Important Update for Hoopla and Libby Users
Beginning July 1, 2026, the Detroit Public Library will adjust the monthly borrowing limit for Hoopla and Libby/OverDrive as follows:
- Hoopla: 12 item checkouts per month
- Libby/OverDrive: 12 item checkouts at a time, with up to 10 additional items on hold
Hoopla and Libby provide access to thousands of ebooks, audiobooks, comics, movies, music titles, and other digital content. During the COVID-19 pandemic, borrowing limits were temporarily increased to support customers when access to our buildings and collections was limited. While our buildings have reopened and physical checkouts have returned, demand for digital materials has remained strong.
As use of these services continues to grow, so do the costs associated with providing digital content. Unlike physical materials, many digital titles require the library to pay licensing fees that are significantly higher and often based on circulation.
Adjusting borrowing limits will help the Library maintain access to popular digital collections, manage rising digital content costs, continue adding new titles and resources, and support the long-term sustainability of these services.
Customers will continue to have access to DPL's wide range of digital resources, including Hoopla and Libby/OverDrive, our databases, online learning tools, and streaming services, as well as physical materials available at all library locations.
If you have questions, please speak with a member of our library staff.
