September 23rd marks the International Day of Sign Languages, celebrated during National Deaf Awareness Month and the International Week of Deaf People. These periods are dedicated to recognizing Deaf culture, history, and the lived experiences of Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals.
There are more than 300 different sign languages used around the world. In the United States, American Sign Language (ASL) is the most widely used.
Did you know that the Detroit Public Library offers ASL storytimes, classes, and other learning resources?
Our next event is an ASL Storytime for children and families on Friday, September 26, 2025, at 2:00 PM at the Douglass Branch Library for Specialized Services (3666 Grand River Ave). This interactive event will include learning ASL colors and a fun craft activity!
Earlier in 2025, the Detroit Public Library partnered with Detroit's Association for the Advancement of Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing to offer two four-part ASL class series for adults. Keep an eye on our events page for future ASL class series.
You can also access our collection of videos, eBooks, and print books dedicated to learning ASL. Try searching our catalog for "American Sign Language" or "Learn ASL" to get started.
