Hispanic Heritage Programs

Ballet Folklorico 2

The Detroit Public Library is focused on acknowledging the different cultures in our community. We are honored to present fun and informative programming to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month at the library.

At Main Library, from September 21 until October 12, join our Thursday Storytimes at 11 am in the Children's Library that will feature Hispanic authors and characters with stories in English and Spanish.

The Main Library will also be having activities for teens and children during the month. First up is a Churro Bar for teens in HYPE on September 22 at 4 pm. Teens will be introduced to the history of churros...and then get to decorate their own!

On Friday, September 29 at 4 pm, children can come to Main to make a paper bag luminaria craft. First, they will learn about the history of paper lanterns, listen to a story that includes the craft, and then get to decorate one to take home!

Other locations are also celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month including the Campbell Branch in Southwest Detroit. On September 23 at 3:30 pm they will be hosting Ballet Folklorico of Detroit who will perform traditional Mexican dances!

And then be sure to come back to the library on November 1 for a huge Dia de los Muertos, Day of the Dead celebration where there will be another performance by Ballet Folklorico as well as crafts, games, and stories. Kids can also come and help decorate the altar and write notes to loved ones who have past while learning about this holiday.
