Summer Reading Kick-Off Joel Tacey

Join us for “The Picasso Magic Show” and celebrate the beginning our 2025 Summer Reading program. Art-themed books of all sorts are brought to life with amazing magic, wacky stunts, and lots of audience participation.
Summer Reading Club
Wednesday, June 25 and July 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30, 1:00 – 2:00 pm
During the summer join us on Wednesdays for pizza and refreshments for kids of all ages. You can listen to a librarian read stories or read one on your own, and then earn prizes for reading achievements!
Fairy Globes
Tuesday, July 1, 2:00 – 3:00 pm
Choose from a variety of embellishments to decorate a globe for your very own fairy or gnome! Recommended for kids ages 5 and up. Supplies are limited.
Exotic Zoo
Wednesday, July 2, 2:00 - 3:00 pm
The Exotic Zoo team will bring live exotic animals from around the world.
Ceramic Paint Party
Tuesday, July 8, 2:00 – 3:00 pm
Select a ceramic animal bank to paint with acrylics, then take it home and start saving your change! Recommended for kids ages 5 and up. Supplies are limited.
Hands-On Folktales

Enjoy an interactive version of the African tale “Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters.”
Peg + Cat Experience (Ages 3 - 5)
Monday, July 28, 10:30 – 11:30 am
Join Peg and her lovable sidekick Cat as they solve problems and explore the world of early math. This session by Detroit PBS Kids will feature Peg + Cat video screenings, engaging math activities, and storytime with related books.
Odd Squad Experience (Ages 5-8)

Step into the world of Odd Squad with Detroit PBS Kids! This hilarious and educational show helps kids build math skills while solving weird and wacky mysteries. We’ll bring Odd Squad to life with video clips, hands-on activities, and fun themed books.
Summer Reading Finale: Cold-Blooded Creatures

Huron-Clinton Metroparks provides an up-close look at Michigan’s reptiles and amphibians! Learn about habitats, populations, diets and adaptations for survival in this hands-on program. Recommended for kids ages 5 and up.
Adult Screening: Building the Reading Brain

Calling all parents and caregivers! Join Detroit PBS for a special screening of Building the Reading Brain, an insightful program designed to help you understand how children learn to read. Explore the science of how the brain learns to read, expert advice from educators and neuroscientists, and practical tips to support your child’s literacy development.
