Summer Reading Launch

Robotics Showcase: 4:00 pm
Fun and games: ALL DAY LONG
We launch our Summer Reading program with special guests from Greening Detroit and Motor City Robotics, as well as board games and activities! Sign up for Youth or Adult Summer Reading and earn prizes all summer.
Summer Reading Storytimes
Mondays, June 23 – July 28, 1:00 – 2:00 pm
Celebrate the Summer Reading theme of “Color Your World” as we explore a new style of art such as drawing, painting, and writing with a story and activity/craft each week. Designed for kids 3-12 years old but all ages welcome.
Summer Reading Art Studio
Thursdays, June 26 – July 24, 4:00 – 5:00 pm
Explore a different artistic medium such as drawing or painting in our weekly Art Studio program where we supply the space and supplies and you supply the creativity! Submit your finished art to be included in our Summer Reading Gallery Show. This program is designed for kids 12-18 years old but all ages welcome, with supervision required for children under 11.
*Special Date* On July 10 our Art Studio will be held at the Detroit Animal Care and Control building for a special photography event at the shelter!
Black Out Poetry
June 30 – July 5
Visit our week-long, drop-in Blackout Poetry station and transform discarded book pages, newspaper articles, and other printed materials into unique and visually striking works of art. (Adult/Families)
Darn It! Visible Mending Circle
Monday, July 14, 6:30 – 7:30 pm
Join our Visible Mending Circle and learn the art of turning tears and holes into beautiful, intentional repairs! We'll explore basic visible mending techniques, transforming worn items into unique expressions of personal style. Bring your own clothes in need of mending, or practice with our provided supplies. Peg + Cat Experience (Ages 3 - 5)
Wednesday, July 16, 12:15 – 1:15pm
Join Peg and her lovable sidekick Cat as they solve problems and explore the world of early math. This session by Detroit PBS Kids will feature Peg + Cat video screenings, engaging math activities, and storytime with related books.
Tiny Art
Monday, July 21, 6:30 – 7:30 pm
We'll provide all the supplies you need to paint your own tiny work of art. From whimsical landscapes to abstract designs, let your imagination run wild in a small format. Your finished piece will be displayed in our special Summer Reading Gallery Show on July 31. (Adult/Families)
Odd Squad Experience (Ages 5-8)
Wednesday, July 23, 4:00 - 5:00pm
Step into the world of Odd Squad with Detroit PBS Kids! This hilarious and educational show helps kids build math skills while solving weird and wacky mysteries. We’ll bring Odd Squad to life with video clips, hands-on activities, and fun themed books.
